Research interest

Historical transnational dimensions: exchanges of ideas and knowledge

Social work, welfare and policies on children’s lives

International comparison as a social and political practice

Ongoing research

Today's global society differs from the past. But that does not mean that global phenomena and interactions has been absent in the past. From the second half of the 19th century there are many examples of transnational circulation of ideas and knowledge.

In my thesis I study transnational dimensions of Swedish child welfare during the first decades of the twentieth century when the Swedish welfare state was beginning to develop. The main focus is on how actors in the historical context produced and reproduced imported knowledge, and how international comparisons were narrated as models or warning examples in the professional discourse on child welfare.

Transnational history, comparative history, child welfare, child protection, welfare state.
