Gender and Culture

Cultural practices and representations - which vary with time, space, and social milieu - are important for individual and group identity and for the production of social similarities and differences, communities and conflicts. The Gender and Culture sub programme puts focus on gendered cultural practices and representations of gender, and studies how gender identity and gender relations are expressed in symbolic form. Research encompasses text- and image-oriented studies of works, forms, styles, and genres as well as context-oriented analysis of practices, institutions, and power relations. An umbrella term for the activities is Feminist Cultural Studies.
