Organization of the PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies

The PhD programme at the Department of Gender Studies is a 4-year-programme of full-time study (240 ECTS Credits) leading to a PhD degree in Gender Studies. Financially justifiable teaching and research fellowships may enable an extension of the time to complete the degree with up to 1 year. The PhD programme at the Tema Institute (including the programme in Gender Studies) is interdisciplinary, entails full-time work, and requires regular on-campus attendance.
The first year of the PhD programme in Gender Studies is an introductory year with courses (60 ECTS Credits) to create a common knowledge base for all PhD students with backgrounds in different disciplines.
Subsequent years are devoted to
1) individual courses for an additional 30 ECTS Credits, which may be made up of PhD courses, taken within the framework of the Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, as well as other national or international courses,
2) the thesis, which accounts for 150 ECTS Credits.
Doctoral students at the Department of Gender Studies receive an education that provides gender analytical skills at a high, international level. The interdisciplinary approach makes it possible for them to analyze and work with gender in many different contexts after earning their doctorates.

After education – gender studies alumni
The National Secretariat for Gender Research has organized a series of studies of Swedish gender studies education. In a recently published report within this series, gender studies alumni have responded to survey questions and participated in focus group interviews, to provide a picture of the connections between gender studies education, ways of perceiving the competencies specific to gender studies, and experiences from the working life that for many alumni have followed after their education.
It's time to apply for courses starting autumn 2013!
