Syllabi and study plans

General study syllabus

According to chapter 6, section 26 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a general study syllabus is required for each subject in which third cycle courses or study programmes are offered.

The general study syllabus must indicate the following:

  • The main content of the study programme
  • Specific entry requirements
  • Any other regulations required

The general study syllabus for postgraduate studies in Environmental Science (LiU-2013-01491) is determined by the Board of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Individual study plan

According to chapter 6, section 29 of the Higher Education Ordinance, an individual study plan must be drawn up for each doctoral student. A template, Individual Study Plan for Postgraduate Studies (LiU-2013-00148) has been adopted by the Board of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Instructions for completing the template are available on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Postgraduate Studies Web.

The individual study plan is an important document in relation to your postgraduate studies. It is a legally binding document and should be regarded as a kind of contract between the doctoral student and the supervisor, wherein the student agrees to perform certain actions under stated terms and conditions. It is important that the doctoral student and the supervisor discuss what they expect from each other at an early stage of the planning process.

  • What can the doctoral student expect of the supervisor in terms of time, physical presence and supervision?
  • What can the supervisor expect of the doctoral student?

The individual study plan must be signed by the doctoral student and all supervisors and must be approved by the department head/director of postgraduate studies immediately when you begin your studies and must be amended every term. The plans are kept on file by the department.

If problems arise during postgraduate studies, the individual study plan is used to assess whether the doctoral student has failed to meet commitments, but also whether the HEI has met its commitments to the doctoral student. For this reason, the individual study plan is not only a superb opportunity to plan and structure your studies, but also to specify these commitments, which are the basis upon which both the university and the doctoral student are assessed in the event of a conflict.
