Keywords: Gender, sexuality, medicine, medical technology, history
My research project is part of a larger project titled A Constant Torment, financed by VR. As part of this project, I explore the connections between the prostate, sexuality, psychopathology and medical technology during the 17th century, in Sweden. I focus on three major aims. First, I aim to establish possible connections between problems with the prostate and diagnoses like male hysteria, sexual neurasthenia, hypochondria, etc., in the medical discourse during the 17th century. Then, I also study connections between problems with the prostate and sexuality/sexual practice. Finally, I explore the medical technology available at this time for treatments concerning the prostate.
