useITsmartly  - Environmental peer-to-peer education for youths with focus on smart use of Information and Communication Technologies

Due to energy-inefficient daily practices and an increasing intensity of use, the electricity demand for IT is increasing rapidly. The International Energy Agency warns that electronic devices “will become one of the largest end-use categories in years to come” for residential electricity consumption (IEA 2009, p. 3). The link between the seemingly immaterial, virtual services and goods and their effects on energy demand and environment are for most consumers not visible. The awareness for environmental impacts of IT use and knowledge about how to save energy while using devices is still missing. Both a combination of innovations from the IT sector, with increased use of renewable energy as well as energy-saving behaviour of users and conscious purchasing decisions are required.

For young people IT use is an important part of their everyday live, as they grew up with it. For example their usage of internet within the last three months was much higher than the average across all age groups: 93% versus 71% (source: Eurostatt 2012). On one hand they are big consumers of IT, on the other hand they are still in a phase of life where habits are shaped and can be influenced, which makes them an important target group from a usage point of view and from a psychological point of view.

“useITsmartly” has the aim to

  • develop innovative solutions to facilitate smart IT use of young people and ideas how to reach young people with this topic. The results will serve as a toolbox for stakeholders who engage in energy behaviour changing programs focused on IT and young people.
  • raise awareness for environmental impacts of IT use among young people by engaging ITpeers.

For meeting these objectives “useITsmartly” is based on an active participation of young people in all project steps by actively involving youths throughout the project they will not only serve as evaluators of solutions developed by the project partners but will take an active part in shaping the solutions. In a first step IT use practices and contexts for behaviour and technology change will be mapped to learn more about attitudes, know-how and practices of IT use of young people. Innovative solutions and ideas to facilitate and encourage energy-efficient IT practices of youths will be explored together with adolescents and their technical feasibility and impacts will be assessed by experts. Based on these knowledge and ideas IT peer group education will be developed and implemented in all participating countries and innovative prototypes visualising aspects of sustainable energy consumption (e.g. solar fashion, apps etc.) to trigger both youths and public interest for the topic will be developed.
