Presentation Technology and social change
Many of today’s most important and challenging questions incorporates technology in one way or another. Examples of these questions are; which political processes lie behind nuclear energy policy or the development of biotechnology? How does information technology influence our interpersonal relations and our ways of communicating with one another? How can we deal with the risks and uncertainties of technological development? How does technology shape our identity and our daily life as well as our concepts of the world?
At Tema T we not only strive to provide answers to these questions; but go beyond them. We critically analyze both the influence of technology and the different types of understandings that are constructed around technology in and by the society. In addition, we analyze the development of engineering and communication systems and how these are used in, as well as affect, everyday life. Our research also focuses on how social actors create as well as exploit technology, and how technical change is interwoven with cultural patterns, daily life, politics and economics.
The research at Tema T is interdisciplinary and includes both contemporary analyzes and historical studies. Research and teaching within the Technology and Social Change unit are focused on a number of important technological fields, and conducted from a number of different theoretical perspectives. The activities are organized into four broad programme areas. One focuses on knowledge, practice and organization in technical and scientific activities, and bears a special responsibility for developing a gender perspective in research on technology and society. Another area deals with the development of infrastructure systems, such as energy and communication technology systems, and how these systems impact and are used in our daily lives. A third area centers on science, technology and valuation practices and concerns how activities of valuation, such as, for instance, economic calculations are part of and shapes science and technology. The fourth area focuses on green humanities, environmental political consumption and humanities and social science methodology.Within the unit, research is also conducted regarding the dynamics of and changes in the energy system, as part of the framework of the national Energy Systems Programme post-graduate school.
Our researchers at Tema T have backgrounds in the humanities, social sciences, and technology. Besides research and graduate studies, Tema T also offers an international master’s programme together with Tema V as well as several undergraduate courses.
Tema T is home to researchers with backgrounds in the humanities, social sciences, and technology. Besides research and graduate education, Tema T also offers an international master’s program and several undergraduate courses. Our activities are organized in three research programmes:
